BALANCING EQUATIONS

Balance the Following 4 Equations:

1. NH3 + O2 => NO + H2O

Solution:
-We enter the equation above (no spaces needed) and hit SUBMIT.
4NH3 + 5O2 => 4NO + 6H2O

2. Cu + NH3 + O2 + H2O => Cu(NH3)4(OH)2

Solution:
-We enter the equation above (no spaces needed) and hit SUBMIT.
2Cu + 8NH3 + O2 + 2H2O => 2Cu(NH3)4(OH)2

3. Complex ionic equation:
FeS2 + Br2 + OH[-] => Fe(OH)3 + SO4[2-] + H2O + Br[-]

Solution:
-We enter the equation above (no spaces needed) and hit SUBMIT.
2FeS2 + 15Br2 + 38OH[-] => 2Fe(OH)3 + 4SO4[2-] + 16H2O + 30Br[-]

4. From electrochemistry, consider the half-reaction:

MnO4[-] + H2O => MnO2 + OH[-]

If this equation is SUBMITted as is, it can not be balanced. So we have to add a free electron anywhere in the equation to allow charge balancing.

MnO4[-] + H2O => MnO2 + OH[-] + e-

We now SUBMIT this equation and achieve the correct balance:

MnO4[-] + 2 H2O + 3 e- => MnO2 + 4 OH[-]
